Monday Marketing Tip: Engage your audience with conversational copy

Start the week with a boost in audience engagement with our Monday Marketing Tip series!

Today’s advice will help you connect with your site visitors by adding a conversational tone to your content copy.

Today’s consumers crave a personal touch. They like to feel as if you’re talking directly to them. This is easy to achieve on the air through the charisma and talent of your radio personalities, but what about your digital content? Your listeners will visit your site to keep the conversation going online, so it’s important to carry over some of that same engaging talk to your blog posts, digital contests, and email newsletter. If you’re unsure of how to make your online copy more conversational, consider these tips:

Avoid using a formal tone. Grammar rules are a bit more lax when you’re writing in a conversational style. Soften your copy with the use of contractions. For example, pretend you’re having a chat with a friend over drinks or coffee. Instead of saying, “It is great to see you,” you would probably say “It’s great to see you.” Using this same approach to your site copy will make it feel less stiff.

Make it a two-way conversation. While writing in first person is a great way to make your brand feel more human, don’t limit your copy to only using “I”, “we”, and “us.” Make your audience feel like part of your brand by inserting them directly into the copy: You can enter for your chance to win a new Smart TV! or Sign up for our newsletter and you’ll receive exclusive discounts from some of your favorite local businesses!

Prompt a response by asking questions. For some online content, such as blog posts from your on-air talent, invite your audience to join the conversation by asking questions. Enable your comments section so they can share their opinion about the topic, or encourage them to use your contact form to provide feedback. Giving them the opportunity to contribute will get them invested in your digital content and keep them coming back to your site.
